It’s official: Britney Spears is a free woman.
According to The New York Times:
“A Los Angeles judge ruled Friday that the conservatorship that has overseen Britney Spears’s life and finances for more than 13 years should be terminated immediately.
The ruling by Judge Brenda Penny of Los Angeles Superior Court ended an arrangement that Ms. Spears had complained of bitterly, and which her fans had rallied against.
In June, Ms. Spears, 39, told the court that the arrangement, which stripped her of control in nearly every aspect of her life, had traumatized and exploited her and asked for it to end without her having to undergo additional mental evaluations.
On Friday, Judge Penny agreed.”
I’m a longtime Britney fan, since 1992 and her Mickey Mouse Club days.
I still remember where I was when I saw the “Baby One More Time” video. I learned all the dance moves to “Oops I Did it Again.” I blared her “Britney” album incessantly during my first true heartbreak. And I still can’t stop myself from dancing when I hear “Till the World Ends.”
And just like so many other fans, I’ve watched with sadness and anger for more than a decade as her life, her choices, and her freedom have been taken out of her control. If you don’t know the details of her conservatorship, I suggest you watch “Britney vs Spears” on Netflix, and “Framing Britney Spears” and “Controlling Britney Spears” on Hulu.
They broke my heart, not just as a fan, but as a woman and a human.
Just one day before her conservatorship ended, Britney posted her “pointers for life” on Instagram. With everything she’s been through, I wouldn’t have blamed her if these tips were a little negative or bitter. What I found was that they were surprisingly grounded, positive, and even hopeful.
While none of them are earth-shattering, they are the lessons we often, and easily, forget when life becomes chaotic and stressful. The lessons we most need when we’re struggling or ready to give up.
So here’s to the little things—like smiling on the tough days, remembering what love was like when we were young, and embracing our foolish moments—which we all know are the big things.
And here’s to hoping that this is the first step toward Britney finally getting the chance to live life on her own terms.
