Disability is a Dirty Word. {Poem}

disability is a dirty word

implying that those who bask in the generosity of normalcy
are somehow superior

meanwhile can you fathom the strength it takes
to walk through this world without legs
to appear as a silent observer
without words

meanwhile the world screams by,
judging you for existing,

misunderstanding the brilliance behind your soft-spoken eyes
differently-abled only scratches the surface
how about unsung heroes of the millennia,
brave light bearers of scant physicality
liminal warriors who walk the left-fold path

a friend has a son with Angelman syndrome
(aptly named, I might add)
look into his eyes and you’ll see he sees dimensions
we can only imagine, a softness and a hunger for touch
we lie to ourselves and act like we are above

disability is a dirty word
it’s these brave souls
here to teach us

how to understand, emphasize, see through different eyes
and to love.
