Sexuality Labels Suck.

Stepping outside the lines of one’s social construct is a daring feat.

We are programmed to believe that fitting into boxes of identity is preferable, wiser, safer.

Those who dare to be different knowingly attract isolation, uncertainty, shame, and harm into their existence.

I grew up in Oklahoma. While most Okies are friendly and warm on the outside, I would challenge every Okie, every human, to examine beliefs and judgments that lurk within every one of us.

When we are surface-level kind, we prevent evolving into humanity’s incredible potential of open-mindedness and transformative acceptance.

When we exclude any human for being different, we invite isolation, uncertainty, shame, and harm into all existence.

Let’s be real: we all judge.

Judgment arises within the filters of our unique lived experience.

It’s what we do with our judgment that matters.

It’s the words we say out loud that leave lasting impact.

Living life as pansexual, bisexual, asexual, as anyone who loves outside the lines, is ballsy.

Some of us outliers only feel comfortable with certain humans whom we know love us regardless of sexual preference.

Sadly, “pick a side” is a common phrase spoken by both “sides.”

Women don’t want to date other women who are also sexually attracted to men. This somehow dilutes the depth of the current commitment. A self-fulfilling prophecy in the making.

Males who identify as bisexual are labeled as being in a transitional “phase” on their journey to 100-percent gay.

We feel constant pressure to prove to the world, and often to our own selves, that we truly belong on both “sides.”

Maybe it is a phase.

But isn’t life one big phase?

For many Christians in American society, it seems Jesus’ incredible life of love, inclusion, and protection of all the outliers is being overtaken by hate, discrimination, violence, and division.

His beautiful messages are simply taught, but not put into action.

Many world religions have love and inclusion at their core.

We are way beyond Past Due for a lesson on how we are to treat all fellow creatures on Mother Earth.

Each and every one of us can be better.

Can do better.

To all the Fellow Weirdos in the world, I see you.

To everyone who believes in spectrums of all kinds, of the raw beauty in all forms of love, keep radiating your colorful lights.

Let us all continue to provide safe space for those who are struggling or unable to be who they truly are within.

Let us continue finding the courage to express ourselves in ways that feel freeing.

And let us continue to hold each other up in love.

~
