When we read the story of the Golden Calf, we read that it was the Erev Rav, the “mixed multitude,” who were the bad people that built this idol. There are certain aspects in each of us that we have given to the Other Side, to negativity, to the things that we know we shouldn’t do—gossiping, ignoring people, being nasty—and feelings that we know aren’t helping anyone—anger, greed, envy, jealousy. All of these negativities that are sometimes inside of each and every one of us are the Erev Rav. And all of us, no matter how righteous and spiritual we are, are here to change that Erev Rav that still dwells within us. |
