Did you know that Capricorn is considered one of the negative months in the Kabbalistic calendar?
Like Leo and Cancer, its energy carries a stronger current of judgment and reactive tendencies. At first glance, this might feel surprising—after all, this New Moon arrives right in the heart of Chanukah, one of the most Light-filled windows of the year. The contradictory energies might seem puzzling, but, spiritually speaking, they’re not contradictory at all.
During this month, and certainly during Chanukah, we are encouraged to see every part of our lives as a blessing—not just the parts we like, but every part. Each blessing, moment of joy, and second of peace is evidence of the Light already within us. Equally, each challenge, delay, and moment of discomfort is an opportunity to expand our vessel. Both are capable of bringing us pleasurable feelings, but only if our perspective allows it.
Many of us experience our lives as a series of ups and downs. We feel aligned, joyful, and elated during the ups, and uncomfortable, heartbroken, and frustrated during the downs. But what if we could access the pleasurable feelings of peace and ease in the face of both, witnessing the ups and downs for the temporary periods that they are? Luckily, the energy of Capricorn is a perfect companion for teasing apart this paradox.
This steadfast earth sign is ruled by Saturn, the planet of limits, rules, responsibility, boundaries, and discipline—and when do we ever associate these things with pleasure? These are aspects of life that we “put up with” at best and outright rail against at worst. Because these are the things that our challenges ask of us, aren’t they? They ask us to have patience, they tell us “No,” they hold us accountable, they beset us with burden…
I mean, they do with that attitude, anyway. But what if that patience is bringing us something better than we ever imagined? What if that “no” was the highest form of protection? What if taking accountability opens us up to new opportunities? What if that “burden” is inviting our greatest growth?
When we’re in the middle of a challenging situation, it can be hard to see the good, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Here are three things you can do with your discomfort that might help reveal the hidden good:
Rethink it
Pain can turn into suffering, especially when it feels meaningless, but I promise, you can rethink your pain. Try gently asking: What if this isn’t happening to me, but for me?
This question initiates a shift in consciousness. It may feel like a microscopic shift, but that’s all the Light ever needs. Simply asking the question opens the door to deeper trust in the process, creative solutions, or even self-compassion. It may not remove the discomfort, but that’s okay, that’s what the next one is for…
Stay with it Long Enough to Learn From It
Most of us rush to escape discomfort, but spiritually, discomfort is a form of information. Instead of pushing the feeling away, I invite you to sit with it. Let the anger rise, let the tears come. Almost always, there is a belief or thought pattern that is ready to be released, maybe a bad habit we’re ready to drop, or a new boundary we need to draw. What is your discomfort telling you that you’re ready for?
Transform It Through Action
Pleasure arises when we take a step—however small—toward our soul’s growth. Capricorn teaches us that discipline and consistent action generate joy, whether it’s an act of self-care, offering kindness to a stranger, being of service, or shifting a reactive pattern.
The friction, pressure, and stress that we feel in times of difficulty can become pleasurable when viewed through a spiritual lens, as we understand that it’s for us and not against us. In a world that values comfort and pleasure above all, this can feel like a curious paradox—but it’s the profound gift of Capricorn. This New Moon invites us to stop resisting what feels difficult, limiting, or uncomfortable. Instead, we’re asked to look with the eyes of wisdom and recognize that these experiences are not blocking our path to our blessings; they are the path.
As the candles of Chanukah continue to shine, let their Light illuminate the deeper truth of this month: Every restriction contains a blessing. Every challenge contains growth. And every moment—whether sweet or painful—is guiding us toward the life we are meant to build and the person we are meant to be.
